If you’re looking to save the planet AND save money, here are five sustainable building materials to consider for your renovation if you’re looking to go green.

In the simplest of definitions, environmental sustainability is classed as meeting our own needs without compromising the planet for future generations to ultimately do the same thing. In a nutshell, the concept is to not inflict any further damage to the earth than what we’ve already done – so what does this have to do with the construction industry?

According to the United Nations, the building industry has the biggest potential for lowering their carbon emissions and greenhouse gases output. While it currently consumes 36% of the world’s energy, adopting greener practices can also help to attract a new type of client as well as cutting production time and building costs.

“The Building Sector has the largest potential for delivering long-term, significant and cost-effective greenhouse gas emissions. This is especially relevant if there is a reduction in manufacturing building materials and products such as steel, cement and glass, which produce 11% of the world’s carbon dioxide.”

Five Sustainable Building Materials Trending For 2021

Hang on, are we saying that it’s possible for the world’s construction industry to walk away from using steel, cement and glass entirely? Not quite, but there are a growing number of sustainable building materials that are being embraced as an alternative – and they can actually save consumers money in the long term too.

Recycled Timber – This is considered to be one of the best sustainable building materials, as it does not require the cutting down of trees, so you’re also saving the timber from going to landfill. In many cases, recycled timber is cheaper than new timber too.

Bamboo – Bamboo’s greatest feature is its incredible growth rate and strength, making it a highly sustainable building option, even when compared to brick or concrete. It grows quickly, and doesn’t require fertilisers, pesticides or irrigation, making it cheaper than steel.

Engineered Wood – This material contains different wood types that are bound or fixed together, as opposed to solid pieces of wood from a single source. It’s considered to be both cost effective and sustainable when compared to sourcing traditional timber options.

Recycled Metals – A lot of energy goes into mining and manufacturing metals like steel and aluminium, which takes its toll on the environment as ore is considered to be a finite resource. Using recycled metals not only helps the planet, but is usually much more affordable.

Green Insulation – Sustainably sourced thermal insulation such as wool, recycled polyester and plant-based polyurethane foam are not only a better choice in terms of sustainable building materials, but they will also help to reduce the price of your electricity and power bills.
